FRENCH-ENGLISH MUSEUM. Monthly illustration... - Lot 183 - Giquello
FRENCH-ENGLISH MUSEUM. Monthly illustration journal, edited by Charles Philipon. Set of 24 issues from January 1855 to December 1856. In-folio, black semi-percaline (contemporary binding). Head of the collection of this monthly magazine published until 1860 in 72 issues, illustrated with numerous woodcut illustrations after Gustave Doré. The first issue, written by Nadar, contains an eulogy by Gustave Doré: It was you who discovered him, my dear Philipon, this Doré, who would always have discovered himself, but in those days it was you who first understood him [...]. Doré, who was hardly accepted as a cartoonist, became the Rabelais: we decided to admit him as a serious draughtsman; we will end up agreeing with Th. Gautier, who said to me on the stairs, when I went out, the first time I took him to Doré: "This twenty-year-old boy will be the greatest painter of his time, if he is not already". The photographer closes his letter by announcing this sad news: Gerard de Nerval has just died. We have linked n°149 (August 5, 1854) to n°170 (December 30, 1854) of the Journal pour rire.
