UNCUNABLE. - CEBES OF THEBES. Tabula: e greco... - Lot 46 - Giquello
UNCUNABLE. - CEBES OF THEBES. Tabula: e greco in latinum conversa per Ludovicum Odaxium Patavinum. S.l.n.a. [to the colophon]: Paris, Guy Marchant, 18 August 1498. Platelet in-4 of 6 unencumbered leaves, black percaline (19th century binding). GW, 2763. - HC, 1907. - Pellechet, No. 1415. Very rare Parisian incunabula, of which barely 30 copies or fragments are listed in public collections. Copy without the first notebook (signed a8) which contains the De ressurectione of Athenagoras translated by Marsile Ficin. The Tabula, which occupies the second and last section (signed b6), is here in the Latin translation of the Paduan humanist Lodovico Odasio (first edition of this translation: Bologna, 1497): this painting, by Cebes of Thebes, Greek philosopher and disciple of Socrates, is an allegory on the destiny of human life. A few annotations from the period in pen. Lack of paper on the back
