Observations on the Society, and on ways to bring order and security back to the Society. Paris, Royez, 1787. 2 parts in one volume in-12, marbled calf, spine decorated, red title coin, red edges (contemporary binding). Partly original edition, the first under this title. Important manifesto against the old criminal justice and judicial torture, by a follower of Beccaria. Strongly influenced by the penal conceptuality of the author of Des Délits et des peines (1764), Jacques-Vincent Delacroix (1743-1832), lawyer to Parliament, judge to the civil court and encyclopaedist, took a very close interest in a reform of criminal justice. His work, first published in 1778 under the title Philosophical Reflections on the Origin of Civilization and the Means of Remedying Abuse, was reprinted in 1781. Ex-libris C. T. Christmas in the Payrat. Nice copy, despite a few freckles
