Trips from St. Petersburg in Russia to various parts of Asia. Paris, Robin, 1766. 3 volumes in-12, marbled basane, spine decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). Chadenat, n°5644. - Cordier, Sinica, col. 2093-2094. First edition of the French translation, decorated with a folding map of the route between Moscow and Beijing. Jean Bell d'Antermony (1691-1780), Scottish diplomat and physician, travelled from 1715 to 1738 on behalf of Peter I of Russia. His diplomatic missions took him to Peking, Esfahan and Derbert in Persia and then to Constantinople. The edition also contains the Diary of the Residence of Mr. Lange, Agent of His Imperial Majesty's Imperial Majesty of All Russia, Peter I, at the Court of Peking, in 1721 & 1722. Containing its Negotiations (vol. II, pp. 125-362). Pleasant example, despite a few slight freckles.
