ALGERIA. - [DUCK] Figure of an extraordinary sign that one wanted in the air, parrying on Algiers on 5 Aoust 1683. And Copy of a Letter [sic] written from the Flote de France, by an Officer François to one of his friends in Toulon. Jouxte the Copy printed in Marseille, Charles Brevion, s.d. Closet in-folio, sheet. Extremely rare duck recounting the bombing of Algiers by Duquesne in 1682-1683. Decorated with a beautiful archaic style wood depicting a Knight armed from headland to headland, in a burning cloud... Abraham Duquesne (1610-1688), lieutenant general of the naval armies of France, commanded the naval operation against the regency of Algiers and twice bombed the city in 1682 and 1683, forcing the dey to free all Christian slaves held captive. Nice document. Missing from Playfair's bibliography on Algeria
