J. RAILLARD, Bourges - Début du XVIIe siècle
Puritan watch in gold and silver plated metal with one hand. Hinged case, the case middle chiselled with foliated motifs, the front and back smooth, the bezel rim decorated with foliated motifs. Single-hand dial with Roman numerals and hour markers for the half hours, the centre with the representation of a church, the surround with foliated motifs and a mascaron in the upper part. Movement with a chiselled cockerel with foliated motifs, verge escapement, spiral pre-balance wheel, rocket with gut string, signed on the plate "J. Raillard Bourges" on the plate. Dim. 45 x 37 mm Jean Raillard's name appears in the Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, Tardy, p. 543. Originally from Bourges, he distinguished himself as a watchmaker and gamalier, most probably repairing the clock of the Cathedral of Saint-Etienne de Bourges in 1627. Our Puritan watch is here a fine example of the first portable watches of the early 17th century, the time of the miniaturization of portable clocks. The puritan watch is nowadays considered as one of the first appearances of the watch.
