Dyptic model sundial in ivory and metal. The entire case with hinged opening includes two equatorial and polar dials, a solar time and lunar calendar converter, manual perpetual calendar with month and date indications as well as the names of key cities (Venice, Milan, Lion, Rochelle, Dole...), rotating discs for setting the solar and lunar indications. The two graduated dials with indications in Roman or Arabic numerals are set in a finely chiselled ivory frame with stylised motifs. The upper part has a hole in the centre for the gnomon. Signature on the back on the round metal plate indicating the perpetual calendar "Fait et Invt par Charles Bloud Dieppe" (Made and Invented by Charles Bloud Dieppe). Dim. 7.5 x 6.5 cm Gross weight 114.78 g Specimen in Elephant spp (Elephantidae spp) ivory conforming to the AM of 4 May 2017 allowing the commercial use of ancient Elephantidae ivory. For an exit from the EU, a CITES re-export permit will be required, which will be at the expense of the future buyer. Charles Bloud (1653-1699) was active in Dieppe in the second half of the 17th century. He still lives in Dieppe in 1686 and is known to have developed many types of sundials on ivory bases such as this one. The measurement of time and its variations with solar time is to this day the oldest mode of calculation already used in antiquity.
