Wooden compass with inscriptions in Chinese characters, the centre with magnetic needle, the concentric rim with the four cardinal points for North, South, East and West indications. Probably Qing dynasty work from the end of the 19th century. Diam.15.5 cm The discovery by the Chinese of certain time-measuring instruments and Imperial China's passion for watches and automata complemented the local manufacture of compasses.
