VORAGINE (Jacques de).
The Golden Legend. English translation by H. Piazza. Paris, Librairie artistique, G. Boudet, 1896. Large in-4, brown morocco, wide frame drawn by golden fillets crossing at the corners and delimiting a central panel decorated with a repeating mosaic decoration of fawn, blue and olive green, smooth spine bearing the golden title in a frame of fillets, double inner fillets, lining and guards of violet silk, golden edges, untrimmed, cover and spine, case (René Kieffer). Compositions lithographed in colour by Alexandre Lunois, frontispiece and woodcut text frames. Unique copy on china (edition at 25 according to Monod), not justified and bearing this consignment in the artist's pencil: [Copy offered to]: Dearest... Here is the copy I promised you. I have chosen it carefully and all the proofs have been seen by me at the printers for both the text and the lithos [...]. It contains the lithographs in several states (the number of proofs varies according to the plates: states on china in black and colour, in colour on japanese, and in colour on laid paper), a suite in black on china of a large number of lithographs, the frontispiece and text frames, as well as 6 original watercolours by the artist. Interesting Kieffer binding with a beautiful mosaic decoration, in the taste of the so-called monastic bindings.
