VALÉRY (Paul).
The Snake. Paris, Editions Eos, 1926. In-4, stapled, cover filled with snakeskin shaped paper, publisher's folder with flaps. 15 original lithographs by Jean Marchand and 24 headbands and 7 culs-de-lampe drawn and engraved with a penknife by Sonia Lewitska. Edition at 230 copies signed by the author and the publisher, this one of the 25 on imperial japanese including 3 suites of illustrations, 2 of them in color. An Editor's Note indicates that it was preferable to offer bibliophiles the essays and variants of the lithographs instead of the usual suites: this copy has a variant of 5 of the 6 lithographs out of text, a bistre suite of 8 lithographs in text, a double suite of 6 essay or variant lithographs (in bistre and sanguine), and a suite in black of the headbands and lamp ends. Complete with his beautifully shaped snakeskin shirt.
