The Flowers of Evil. Paris, Éditions du Cinquentenaire de Baudelaire, 1917. Large volume large in-4, morocco eggplant, on the first plate a large branch of flowers proper traced in gold, the flowers mosaic in various shades of colour, and a naked figure lying and leaning drawn in silver, around which is a snake, back to four large nerves, lyre motif with a mosaic floral stem in the centre, red morocco interior scroll, red morocco lining set with a gold fillet and adorned with a wide floral mosaic border in various tones, burgundy moire lining, gold edges on witnesses, cover and back, case (H. Blanchetière 1923). Edition raised to the glory of Baudelaire on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death, established by Charles Meunier and Lobel-Riche. Printed in Giraldon characters, it is illustrated with a portrait of the author and 40 plates, engraved in etching by Lobel-Riche. Edition at 24 copies only: 12 on vellum paper and 12 others on japanese paper. Copy on japanese, including illustrations in several states, including the pure etching: all plates are in 4 states, except for the portrait (2 states) and the plate illustrating the poem Le Chat (p. 85, 6 states). The copy is furthermore enriched with: - a beautiful original pencil, pencil and blood drawing for The Giant. - an original pencil drawing for The Death of the Lovers (p. 199). - an original watercolour for Chanson d'après-midi (p. 227). - an original drawing in three pencils for Prayer of a Pagan (p. 246). - one board refused for Les Yeux de Berthe, 3-state event on japan. Interesting lined and mosaic binding by Blanchetière, the mosaic flowers being in the manner of Charles Meunier.
