PENDENTIAL MASK Izapa Culture, Mexico-Guatemala Late Pre-Classical, 400-100 BC Light green jadeite with traces of red pigment H. 12,5 cm - W. 9 cm Izapa maskette, light green jadeite with traces of red pigment, Mexico-Guatemala, H. 4 7/8 in - W. 3 3/8 in Provenance: Private American Collection Acquired by the present owner in 2003 Galerie Mermoz, Paris, 1999 Private European Collection, 1970 Exhibition: Galerie Mermoz, XVI Biennale des Antiquaires: Grand Palais, Paris, 18 September - 4 October 1992 This pendant mask represents a monkey with a protruding tongue. The fangs, and the ape-like shape of the eyes and nose are clearly visible. He is girded with the royal band the "huun" linked to dynastic power since the Pre-Classical period and worn by the sovereign at the time of his enthronement. This headband is decorated with jade beads and in the centre is a medallion depicting the "Jester God" (Jester God) symbol of royal power. CP
