TRIPOD DISH DECORATED WITH A DANCER FROM THE MAYAN CULTURE, NORTH-EAST PETÉN, RECENT CLASSICAL GUATEMALA , 600-900 A.D.-C. Ceramic with polychrome decoration on engobes brown-orange and brick red H. 8,3 cm - D. 34,9 cm Maya polychrome tripod plate with dancer, polychrome ceramic with brown-orange and red slip, Petén, Guatemala H. 3 1/4 in - D. 13 3/4 in Provenance: Private American collection Acquired by the present owner in 2004 Herbert L. Lucas, Los Angeles Martha Henry Inc, New York, 1996 The Lands Beyond, New York Publication: Kerr, Justin, Maya Vase Database: An Archive of Rollout Photographs, mayavase.com, K7266, added 19/01/1998 ? This large tripod dish, each hollow foot of which contains terracotta balls to act as bells, is inspired by an original model of dishes said by ceramists to belong to the "Ik complex", type "Saxche Orange Polychrome". Originally, this type was made in Tikal during the time of the 22nd king, i.e. in the last years of the 6th century and the beginning of the 7th. Examples of such dishes that have been - within a radius of a few tens of kilometres around Tikal - discovered in an archaeological context have shown that the dancer personifying the reborn corn deity Hun Ixiim, painted on the bottom of the object, was frequently ritually neutralized (by means of a perforation, which is not the case here), on the occasion of the death of the person who had decided to take it to his grave. The examples found in excavations by archaeologists have also shown that the head of the deceased was covered with these dishes, with the decoration on the inner face placed against the face (and therefore with the feet of the object facing upwards from the grave). The unusual originality of the decoration of this piece is that it was enhanced before firing with blue paint, particularly in the representation of jewellery, feathers and other ornaments. JMH
