FIGURINE REPRESENTING A NAIN Olmec culture, Arroyo Pesquero, Veracruz, Mexico Middle Preclassic, 900-400 BC. Hands are placed on either side of the belly, palms hollow and open in a ritual attitude. The fingers are underlined by small engravings, the buttocks and thighs are defined by fine lines. The head emerges directly from the shoulders and there is also a strong ritual deformation of the skull backwards, an act practiced by the Olmec elite. The top of the skull is slightly sunken. The trapezoidal mouth is open, revealing the upper gum. The lips are generous, the commissures drooping. The nose rests classically on the upper lip. The eyes are hollowed out in the shape of an almond. The V-shaped eyebrows meet at the top of the nose. The auricle of the ear goes beyond the line of the face, the lobes are pierced and used to support ornamental earrings.
