TREITZAURWEIN (Marx) et MAXIMILIEN
Ist. Der Weiss Kunig. Eine Erzehlung von den Thaten Kaiser Maximilian des Ersten. Vienna, Joseph Kurzböckens, 1775. High volume in-folio, paperboard sale with pink glue, smooth back, green title piece (original binding). Fairfax-Murray, German books, n°416. Original edition of one of the most beautiful German plate books of the 18th century. The book, which relates the actions of Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519), was written under the very direction of the sovereign by his secretary, Marc Treitzaurwein, but was not completed under his reign. It was only published two centuries later, according to manuscripts and woods found in the Vienna library. Magnificent illustration with 237 woodcut plates based on drawings by Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schäufelein, Leonhard Beck and Hans Springinklee; all in first print, with the exception of the last engraving, engraved again in the 18th century. The woods, carved at the beginning of the 16th century, had never been used: 6 of them represent hunting and fishing scenes, the others show mostly battle scenes. Copy printed on strong paper, in its waiting box. Subsequently, the supplement published by Edwin Tross in 1869 containing 8 unpublished plates copied by Johannes Schratt that were missing from the 1775 and 1799 editions was added. Freckles. Binding a little used with the lower part of the back removed.
