TORRENTINUS (Hermannus)
Elucidario poetico. Venice, Giorgio de' Cavalli, 1565. In-8, soft vellum, traces of links, smooth back with the title in ink (Binding of the time). Second edition of the Italian translation of the Elucidarius poeticus, the first geographical and historical dictionary of its kind, composed by Hermannus Torrentinus, a Flemish humanist born in Zwolle in the middle of the 15th century and who died around 1520, printed in italics, it was published by Giorgio Cavalli, a Verona typographer active in Venice between 1564 and 1570. The two superb typographical marks of the latter, depicting an elephant supporting a crenellated tower protected by soldiers, appear on the title and back of the last leaflet. A few freckles. A new guard.
