SCHOTT (Gaspard)
Mechanica hydraulico-pneumatica. Frankfurt, Johann Godfried and Heinrich Pigrin, 1657[1658 on the false title]. In-4, granite basane, decorated back, speckled slices (Binding of the time). Original edition, decorated with a beautiful frontispiece, 46 intaglio engravings on 45 plates, some of which unfold, and some wood figures in the text. A fine book devoted to pneumatic and hydraulic machines, the first published by Gaspard Schott (1608-1666), a Jesuit and German physicist who was Kircher's friend and disciple. The appendix contains a description of the experimental device (the famous Magdeburg hemispheres) designed by Otto von Guericke to demonstrate the existence of vacuum and the action of air pressure (cf. Norman, n°1910). The copy belonged to Louis de Puget (1635-1709), a physicist and naturalist who was a specialist in magnets and one of the founders of the Lyon Academy. The latter's library was transferred to the Jesuits of Lyon (the handwritten ex-libris of this congregation, dated 1709, is affixed to the title). Ex-libris Galland manuscript on a guard. Burnishes. Missing the upper cap, worm gallery on a bit, rubbed corners.
