Philosophical and political history of European settlements and trade in the two Indies. Geneva, Jean-Léonard Pellet, 1780. 5 volumes in-4 (4 volumes of text and an atlas), tortoise shell calf, triple gilt net, fleuron at the corners, decorated back, red title and green tomaison pieces, jaspered edges (period binding). Final edition, partly original, and the best of this book published clandestinely since 1770 and then condemned by the Parliament of Paris. It is decorated with a beautiful portrait of the author engraved after Cochin and 4 pretty frontispieces of Moreau the young man. The atlas contains 50 double-page engraved maps and the text volumes contain 21 (out of 23) statistical tables. In addition to a history of the exploration and colonization of America, Father Raynal's book contains a strong denunciation of slavery and the exploitation of the colonies by the metropolis (cf.
