RANGOUZE (Pierre de)
Panegyric letters to the King, the blood princes, other princes, dukes, peers and Crown officers. - Panegyric letters to the greatest Reynes of the World, to the princesses of the blood of France, other princesses & illustrious ladies of the Court. Printed at the expense of the Autheur, Paris, 1651. Set of 2 works in an in-8 volume, marbled morocco, decoration at the Du Seuil, central jewel loaded with an empty quatrefoil, back decorated, slices speckled with red (modern pastiche binding). Curious collections of letters that the author wrote to great figures in the kingdom of France to obtain some rewards. These were printed separately, without signatures or pagination, so that the order of the pieces could be reversed and the author could offer their dedication to each of these people. Each collection is therefore different. Our copy includes a total of 74 pieces (44 + 30), including 2 addressed to the King and 2 others to the Queen, as well as 2 engraved portraits, one of the young Louis XIV engraved by Balthasar Montcornet, the other of the Queen Mother Anne of Austria. Pierre Bayle, in his Dictionnaire historique et critique (t. IV, 1740, p. 31), salutes in Pierre de Rangouze the talent of an Author who is enriched by the work of his pen, & by the flexibility with which he deals with dedicatory Epistles, & Copies envoiez deça & delà, because all science, without excepting even that of ruses & deception, is a kind of perfection. Copy in modern pastiche binding, the original binding plates preserved.
