PAUL (Simon)
Quadripartitum botanicum de simplicium medicamentorum facultatibus. Strasbourg, Simon Paul Jr., 1667. In-4, rigid vellum, ink title on the back (Binding of the time). Krivasty, n°8684. - Pritzel, n°6992. Third edition of this pharmacopoeia, after those of 1639 and 1640. Printed by the author's son, a bookseller-printer living in Strasbourg at the time, it is illustrated with 8 pretty intaglio plates, including an allegorical frontispiece, a figure showing an author offering his book to a prince surrounded by his advisors, the author's large coat of arms and bust portrait, an architectural frontispiece placed before the printer's opinion to the reader, and a botanical plate. Simon Paul I (1603-1680), a German doctor and botanist, first taught medicine at the University of Rostock, his native city, before moving to Copenhagen. There, he held the chairs of medicine, surgery and botany specially created for him, and was appointed the king's first doctor and prelate of Aarhus. Manuscript bookplates of the time crossed out on the false title. Burnishing over the entire volume, due to the quality of the paper used in the Rhine region at the time. Stained and rubbed vellum.
