MATTHIOLI (Pierre André)
Epistolarum Medicinalium Libri Quinque. Lyon, César Farine, 1564. In-8, marbled basane, decorated back, red edges (18th century binding). Baudrier, t. I, p. 148. - Durling, No. 3034. Second edition, the first in this format, of the Medicinal Letters of the great Sienese doctor and naturalist Matthioli (1500-1577). The first edition, in-folio format, had been published in Prague three years earlier. The edition was printed for César Farine, publisher and bookseller active in Lyon and Turin in the second half of the 16th century (very few books bear his Lyon address). It is decorated with 6 woods in the text, 4 of which are plants (including two acrostics, plants of the ferns family) and 2 showing animals, including a llama (p. 630), which the author calls Cervocamelo. Trace of red wax stamp and old handwritten ex-libris, affixed to the title. Freckles, gallery of verses at the top of several notebooks. Rubbed binding, hooked to the upper cap.
