MANUSCRIT. - Thesis on the Levant trade. 1787-1788. In-folio manuscript of 3 and 7 unquantified pages, the first part in sheets, the second sewn with a blue silk ribbon. Interesting manuscript in which the author, a man named Le Bon, points out the threat posed by Russia and England, which are trying by all means to get their hands on the trade in Le Levant, owned by the Turks, and to harm French interests. The author refers in particular to the events of 1787-1788: Russia used a stratagem in concert with its allies to seduce the Courts of Versailles and Madrid, telling them that the opportunity was most favourable to revive the Crusades, and that it was necessary[sic] for the Christian powers to meet to expel the Turks [...] from Europe.It also evokes mercantile competition, England's foreign policy and the establishment of a game of manipulation between the nations of Europe: That Russia came to sail in the North Sea, in the French and Spanish oceans as far as the Mediterranean, with ships for trade it was to be well received, but not armed at war,[...] Russian ships were mounted by English pilots[...].
