LAW (John).
Het groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid, Vertoonende de opkomst, voortgang en ondergang der Actie, Bubbel en Windnegotie, in Vrankryk, Engeland, en de Nederlanden, gepleegt in den Jaare 1720. S.l.n.n. Amsterdam, D. Onder de Linden], 1720, In-folio, marbled calf, gilded calf wheel in frame, fawn calf border delimited by two straight and curved wheels at the corners, fleurons, cartridge with gilded reserve middle in the centre, decorated back, speckled edges (Dutch binding at the time). Sabin, n°28932. An extraordinary book describing the first stock market crisis in history. Illustrated with 73 (out of 74) intaglio plates, most of which are unfolded, the book strongly and sarcastically illustrates Law's famous bankruptcy in 1720, and denounces in a caricatured manner, sometimes turning to obscenity, the rise and fall of speculators. Exemplary in a very attractive 18th century Dutch binding. Uneven print run. Slot in the central fold of some engravings and 3 lined plates. Missing head cap, worn corners, two jaw slot.
