KÜCHLER (Balthasar)
Repraesentatio Der Fürstlichen Auffzug und Ritterspil [...]. Schwäbischn Gmund, Küchler, n.d. [1611]. In-folio oblong, cold stamped sow skin, wheels and greasy net in frame and delimiting a central panel, back with four nerves, slices speckled with red (German binding at the time). Ruggieri, n°946. - Vinet, n°738. First edition of this magnificent Baroque festive book immortalizing the celebrations that took place in Stuttgart in 1609 for the princely wedding of Johann Friedrich, Duke of Württemberg, and Barbara Sophie, Margravine of Brandenburg. Remarkable illustration entirely engraved on copper by Balthasar Küchler (around 1571-1641), a painter from Silesia who made his career in Schwäbisch Gmund in Germany, including a frontispiece title and 242 engravings arranged on 238 plates (some engravings are printed on the same plates) representing spectacular processions of ornate floats, the parade of elites and other high dignitaries, musicians, equestrian games, etc. It is extremely rare to find absolutely complete copies of this book, the exact number of plates seems undetermined: if the number announced by Vinet (253) seems incorrect, it appears that the number of plates of several copies described online varies between 239 and 241. Very attractive copy in a German cold stamped sowskin binding. He does not have the account of this event by Johann Öttinger, which has sometimes been attached to the copies. A raised board, some light freckles, traces of folds on the frontispiece title and the last board.
