KIRCHER (Athanase)
China monumentis [...]. Amsterdam, Jacob van Meurs, 1667. In-folio, vellum (Binding of the time). Cordier, Sinica, col. 26. - Merrill, n°20. A very beautiful book on China and one of Father Kircher's (1602-1680) most famous works, which here offers a synthesis of the knowledge of his time on the Middle Kingdom: the history of China, its government, the religion and customs of its inhabitants, the natural wonders of the country, architecture, mechanical arts, languages, writing, etc. Counterfeiting of the original edition published the same year by Janszoon in Amsterdam, illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece, a portrait of Kircher, 2 maps, 23 plates and about 50 copper engravings in the text representing Asian characters, costumes, divinities, animals and plants, etc. It should be noted that most of the figures are skillful copies, sometimes inverted, of the original engravings. Wetting, consolidated boards.
