Anatomy and physiology of the nervous system in general, and of the brain in particular, with observations on the possibility of recognizing several intellectual and moral dispositions of humans and animals, through the configuration of their heads. First edition of this founding and central work of phrenology, in which doctor Franz-Joseph Gall (1758-1828) presents his controversial theories on the brain, in particular on the location of brain functions. The first two volumes were written with the collaboration of his student Johann Caspar Spurzheim (1776-1832). The illustration includes 100 plates engraved on copper by Bouquet after Priest, gathered in an atlas. Copy with many pencil markers in the margins, to which a mortar portrait and 2 facsimile letter plates have been added in the atlas. Missing are the 4 dedication sheets (at the top of volumes I, III and IV). Tear repaired with adhesive pp. 43-44 of Volume I. Angular wetness affecting many volumes in Volume II, marginal freckles and wide wetness affecting several boards. Used binding.
