FONTANA (Félix)
A treatise on the viper's Benin[sic], American poisons, cherry laurel and a few other plant poisons. Florence. And is in Paris, Senior Nyon; London, Emsley, 1781. 2 volumes in-4, cardboard, uncut (Binding of the time). Blake, p. 150 - Garrison & Morton, n°2103. - Sabin, n°24988. First edition of the French translation, decorated with 10 folding plates engraved on copper, considerably increased compared to the original edition published in Lucca in 1767, it also contains the author's anatomical observations on nerves and eyes, as well as his experiments on American poisons (notably curare). The anatomist Félice Fontana (1730-1805) was the physicist of the court of Florence and directed the natural history cabinet of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, called the Specola, where he collected an incredible collection of anatomical waxes shaped by his hands, thus bringing the art of ceroplasty to its peak. His book, which corrects the errors of Rédi and Charas on the nature of viper venom, focuses on studying its effects, which is the first modern research on the subject. Copy in waiting box. Wet stamps on the titles. A little missing from a headdress.
