CARRACHE (Annibal)
The Arti di Bologna disegnate da Annibale Caracci. Rome, Gregorio Roisecco, 1740, In-folio, half chocolate calf with fawn, back with nerves underlined with cold fillets, red title piece, slices speckled with red (modern binding). A superb collection of "shouts" representing itinerant merchants and other popular figures from Bologna at the end of the 16th century. Remarkable intaglio illustration after the Bolognese painter Annibal Carrache (1560-1609), including a frontispiece title featuring a 49-year-old portrait of Carrache engraved on a tomb supported by a sphinx and a sphinge and decorated with the artist's attributes, and 80 full-page plates. Carracci's drawings were first interpreted on copper by Simon Guillain in the 1640s, then influenced Mitelli for the publication in 1660-1680 of a series of engravings entitled L'Arti per via.... Clear freckles and haloes.
