I, col. 205-206. - Wheeler Gift, No. 97. Original edition of one of the very first scientific treatises on magnetism and electricity. Nicolo Cabeo (Nicolaus Cabeus in Latin) (1586-1650), a Jesuit father born in Ferrara and a contemporary of Athanase Kircher, taught theology and mathematics in Parma and Genoa. His Philosophia magnetica is one of his main publications with a study on meteorology, published in 1646. The illustration includes a beautiful architectural frontispiece title, 4 copper figures in the text (including the world map which is repeated once) and nearly 150 woodcuts. Copy of the first edition (out of three), with the royal coat of arms on the frontispiece. Beautiful copy in period vellum. Small stamp scratched at the bottom of the frontispiece and on the last page. Small restorations in the frontispiece.
