BIBLE. - Hebraica biblia latina. Basel, s.n.,... - Lot 114 - Giquello
BIBLE. - Hebraica biblia latina. Basel, s.n., 1534-1535[on colophon] : Basel, Ex Officina Bebeliana, Michael Isengrin and Heinrich Petri, 1534-1535. 2 volumes in-folio, granita calf, cold fillet, decorated back, red title and tomaison pieces, slices speckled with red (modern pastiche binding). Darlow & Moule, n°5087. First edition of this imposing Hebraic-Latin Bible, translated and published by Sebastian Münster (1489-1552), a German humanist who was an eminent Hebraic and a renowned cosmographer. This Protestant Bible, the first directly based on the Hebrew text, had a great influence on Bible studies and the Bibles published later: Myles Coverdale used Münster's Latin version in particular for the revision of the Old Testament of the famous Great Bible of 1539, commissioned by Thomas Cromwell and which was the first authorized edition of the Bible in English. Printing on two columns, the Hebrew text established on the Rabbic Bible of 1517. Beautiful copy, well adjusted, impeccably bound in the taste of the 18th century. Small gap without missing at the top of the M1 sheet in Volume I. Clear wetness in the margin of a few sheets.
