BERNARD DE CLAIRVAUX (Saint)
Opera. Lyon, Jean Mareschal, 1530, High volume in folio, marbled basane, double cold net, decorated back, red slices (early 18th century binding). Baudrier, t. XI, p. 444. Remarkable edition in Lyon of the works of Saint Bernard de Clairvaux (1091-1153), founder and abbot in 1115 of the Cistercian abbey named after him. Printed on two columns, it comes from the presses of Jean Mareschal, printer and bookseller who inherited the material from his father, Jacques I, and who was active in Lyon from 1530 to 1550. The title, printed in black and red, is placed in a Renaissance style frame formed by four borders on wood (reproduced by Baudrier, t. XI, p. 456 bis), and bears in the centre the family typographical mark drawn by Georges Reverdi (mark n°4 de Baudrier). This edition is very rare and the only one listed in French public collections is located in Avignon. Rusty notebooks. Worm work on the counterplates and guards, slightly reaching the margins of the last sheet. Friction in the binding, caps reinforced with a piece of brown leather.
