ATLAS. — MÜNSTER (Sébastien) et François de BELLEFOREST
Universal cosmography of everyone. Paris, Michel Sonnius, 1575. 2 volumes in 3 volumes in folio, porphyry basane, triple golden net, smooth decorated back, red title piece, red slices (19th century binding). Borba de Moraes, t. I, pp. 82-83. - Chadenat, number 13. - Sabin, number 51400. Beautiful French edition of Sébastien Münster's Cosmography, originally published in 1550, translated and revised by the polygrapher and historian François de Belleforest (1530-1583). With many new parts on France, it was shared between Nicolas Chesneau and Michel Sonnius. The illustration, mainly copied from that of Münster's book, includes numerous woodcuts (figures, views, maps and plans) in the text or double-page, included in the pagination, and 16 maps and non-text plans (13 + 3), often double-page or foldable. In Volume I, we find the legendary world map Typus orbis terrarum, a map of London and another of Paris, which is extremely rare according to Chadenat. Volume II contains a map of Africa and two beautiful maps of Jerusalem and Cairo. The engravings are often views of cities: Paris, Beauvais, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Bordeaux, Lyon, Rouen, Autun, Florence, Rome, Zurich, Cologne, Louvain, Vienna, Buda, Rhodes, Aden, Goa, Calcutta, Mexico, Cuzco, etc. There is also a remarkable double-page sheet depicting sea and land monsters, which can be found in many places in the northern parts of the country, and a curious engraving of bison (col. 1699-1700 in Volume I). Part of Volume II is devoted to America, with details on Canada, Florida and Brazil, including a chapter on the great Maragnon River and the so-called Caribes, or Canibales peoples. Wetness on a few leaves, especially in Volume I. Volume I: reinforcement at the fold of the London plan and at the map of France, Autun's plan is detached, restoration at the lower corner of the r3 and r4 sheets. Small consolidation à la carte of Germany in the second volume. Scratches and s
