Hieroglyphics. Otherwise, Comments on the sacred letters and figures of the Aegyptians & other Nations. Lyon, Paul Frellon, 1615[at the end]: Lyon, En l'Imprimerie de Jacques du Creux, dict Molliard, 1615. In-folio, cold stamped rigid vellum, net frame, cartridge with interlacing decoration with reserve medium struck in the centre, ribbed back, ink title (Binding of the time). Caillet, n°10980. - Landwehr, Romanic, No. 765. - Praz, p. 521. Original edition of Jean de Montlyart's French translation of one of the most famous and important books of Renaissance emblems. Valeriano's Hieroglyphica (1477-1560), known as Pierius, first printed in 1556, was a considerable success and was translated into several languages. It is a vast, orderly and scholarly commentary on the emblems and symbols found in ancient hieroglyphics. Superb architectural frontier title, engraved intaglio by Léonard Gaultier, richly ornamented and compartmentalized with historical scenes, with the author's portrait at the top of the composition, and more than 300 woodcut emblems in the text, identical to those in the Latin edition given by Frellon in 1602. A counterfeit title sheet would be missing. Small lack of marginal paper on one table leaflet and tearing at the top of the BBB5 leaflet. A few slight freckles.
