SIBLY (Ebenezer)
A New and Complete illustration of the Occult Sciences. London, Stalker, 1790-1791. 4 parts in a high volume in-4, brown calf, cold crossed net frames, fleuron in the corners, decorated back (English binding of the time). Dorbon, n°4577 (for the 1785 edition). Very rare book, one of the best and most complete in English on the occult sciences. Curious illustration engraved on copper, with a frontispiece and 27 plates, plus 2 others engraved on wood (Scheme of the Heavens and Scheme of the Solar). Among these plates, we should mention the portraits accompanied by their astrological themes of various scholars and humanists (Sibly himself, Erasmus, Luther, Melanchthon, Whitchell, Henderson, Whitfield, etc.).), a plate depicting the American Revolution with its astrological theme, a plate showing four views of Man in his primordial state, vested by his Creator with the power to command and govern the Elements, and of the fallen Man after his contamination by Lucifer, and under the domination of the sidereal and elementary influence, or a plate depicting magician Edward Kelley in a séance de spiritism in a cemetery. The fourth part of the book, dated 1791, deals with the distinction between astrology and the bad practices of exorcism, and gives an overview of magic, divination and witchcraft. From the Quatremere library (engraved armoured ex-libris). Freckles, wetness on a few leaves. Frontispiece restored at the corners and restarted in the bottom, title raised. Binding very restored, the back is redone.
