SENDIVOGIUS (Michel)
Discuss the newly discovered cosmopolitan. Paris, Laurent d'Houry, 1691. In-12, granite basane, decorated back, slices speckled with red (Binding of the time). Caillet, n°10131. A very rare treatise on alchemy by Sendivogius (1566-1646), a Polish alchemist born in Moravia who allegedly delivered another alchemist named Alexandre Séthon, known as the Cosmopolitan, from the prison in Dresden, held prisoner and tortured by the elector of Saxony Christian II. The book contains the statutes and rules of the cabalistic society of the unknown philosophers, whose seal is reproduced on wood p. 225, as well as the Cosmopolitan letters on the theory and practice of the philosopher's stone. This volume is part of the edition of Le Cosmopolite or Nouvelle lumière chymique, given by the same publisher in the same year. However, it was sold separately, reports Dorbon, n°4552. Copy with some annotations and many underlined in ink, some banners and typographical florets later coloured. Binding a little worn, hinges redone.
