The Works. Paris, Guillaume Bichon, 1588. High volume in-8, rigid speckled vellum, ribbed back, red title piece, red slices (18th century binding). Caillet, n°8610: Second edition of the French translation, after the 1575 edition, of the Works of Philo of Alexandria, known as Philo the Jew (1st century AD). It was established by Pierre Bellier, adviser at the Châtelet de Paris, who, having taken on a real passion for Philo, resigned from his duties to go to Rome to consult the author's manuscripts. The edition is illustrated with 6 pretty woodcut figures in the text, including one full page (Creation of the world, tabernacle, candlestick, costume of the great pontiff, etc.). Unidentified engraved armorized ex-libris. From the Élie Petit library (ex-libris label). Spots and wetting on several sheets, worm gallery in the lower margin of about fifty sheets.
