MUSAEUM HERMETICUM reformatum et amplificatum omnes sopho-spagyricae artis discipulos [...]. Frankfurt, Hermann to Sande,[1677-]1678. High volume small in-4, red morocco, straight golden lace, coat of arms in the centre, decorated back, fine inner castor, golden edges (modern binding). Caillet, n°7891 (A work of the greatest rarity). - Dorbon, n°3212. - Ferguson, t. II, pp. 119-120. Important and extremely rare collection of alchemical treatises. The original edition, published in Frankfurt in 1625, contained only 10 treatises, while the second edition contains 21, all in continuous pagination with specific title pages (dated 1677, only the frontispiece and the general title page are dated 1678). The 1749 edition is only a reprint of ours. Among the most interesting treatises of the volume are: the Tractatus brevis, sive Summarium philosophium by Nicolas Flamel, the Gloria mundi, alias paradysi tabula, the De lapide philosophico by Lambsprinck (cf. Landwehr, German emblem books, n°397), the Tractatus chymicus by Thomas Norton, the Novum lumen chemicum... Sendivogius sulphide tractatus, Philalète's treatise on the transmutation of metals, or Helvetius ' Vitulus aureus, a remarkable illustration engraved intaglio, featuring a pretty Merian frontispiece with a border decorated with historical scenes, 5 full-page figures, 12 figures in the text for Basil Valentine's Keys, 15 emblems and a coat of arms for Lambsprinck's treatise on the Philosopher's Stone, and 4 superb folding plates, placed at the end of the volume, forming in themselves a kind of Kabbala denudata. Copy in modern binding with the arms of the King of the Two Sicilies. A few annotations in ink or pencil.
