Intellectual songs on the Resurrection of the Phoenix by Michel Maïer. 1758. In-4 manuscript (232 x 165 mm), 17 unquoted pages, red half-marble, smooth ornate back, M numeral crowned in tail, unquoted (F. Barbance 2003). Manuscript copy, from the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century, of the text of the French translation of Father Le Mascrier de Bure published in 1758. Michael Maier (1569-1622), a German physicist, was the doctor of Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg and a close friend of the Rosicrucians. The manuscript opens with a title written on a strong paper cover, with a coloured drawing underneath (Rosicrucian symbol); 4 alchemical scenes reproduced in colour and pasted on 2 white pages. At the end, a long note from the Zodiac of Human Life (1733), relating to the phoenix, a mythical animal associated with the last stage of the Great Work and whose symbolism is important for alchemists, with a colour drawing showing a triumphant phoenix in the flames.
