MANUSCRIT. — JOACHIM DE FLORE
Prophetiae. Manuscript in-8 (215 x 140 mm), 58 pages, granite calf, smooth back with long gilded title (modern binding). Interesting early 17th century manuscript of the famous prophecies of the Cistercian monk Joachim de Flore (circa 1130-1202). It is illustrated with 29 original pen drawings, interpreted at the time from the copper engravings in the original edition of the Vaticinia sive prophetiae published in Venice in 1589. The location of page 18 has remained blank, as the drawing has not been executed (although there is an engraving corresponding to this text in the Venetian edition). The manuscript of the Prophecies occupies 30 pages. It is preceded by a biography of Joachim de Flore and comments on the first and fourth prediction, written in Italian by another hand (13 pages), and followed by prophecies of Saint Malachi accompanied by a list of popes and their currencies since Celestine II (1143) (XV pages). This last part is decorated with a full-page drawing of the wheel of Pius IV, which, executed on a different laid paper, was later added. Large engraved ex-libris dated 1912 from the library of the castle of Hamsurheur (Belgium). Modern binding, the plates of the old binding reapplied.
