MANUSCRIT. — [FABRE (Pierre-Jean)]
Alchymy rampart. late 18th - early 19th century]. In-4 manuscript (about 240 x 185 mm), 189 pages, half vellum, blue paper covered dishes, ink title on the back (19th century binding). Handwritten copy, on laid paper, of an elegant and perfectly legible writing, of the first French translation of the Propugnaculum alchymiae (1645), published in 1790 in Paris by the knight Dernelon. The author, born around 1588 in Castelnaudary, practiced spagyric medicine in his hometown. In the 37 chapters of his treatise, he seeks to demonstrate the existence of the Stone of Philosophers (cf. Dorbon, n°1575): Let us conclude that the alchymy is true, that the stone of Philosophers is true, that their gold is true, that it is through chemical art that the stone of Philosophers is made, that it is foolhardy that the Misochymics have despised the alchymymy and the stone of Philosophers [...]. The manuscript belonged to Louis-François de Bourbon-Busset (1749-1829), with a long note from his hand on the back of the last sheet concerning the completion of the great Work. During the Revolution, this alchemist and freemason, close to Louis XVI, took refuge in his castle at Bourbon-Busset (Allier) where he set up his library and alchemical laboratory. Nice original drawing in color next to the first page, showing a phoenix triumphing over the flames.
