MANUSCRIT. — BORON (Robert de)
The Holy Grail Novel. Tours, 1849. In-4 manuscript (260 x 185 mm) of 679 pages, half-marbled green with long grain, back with nerves bearing the gilded title (modern binding). Handwritten copy, of a very neat and readable writing, of the prose adaptation of the History of the Holy Grail in the cycle of Joseph of Arimathea told by Robert de Boron (12th-13th centuries). As a note from the copyist at the beginning of the volume indicates, the manuscript was copied onto a manuscript by Marmoutier, currently at the Tours Public Library. It is decorated with a large original full-page pen drawing and 3 loose sheets on tracing paper reproducing in pencil illuminated pages of the manuscript (two initials subsequently enhanced with a blue pen). According to Richard O'Gorman, "La tradition manuscrite du Joseph d'Arimathie en prose de Robert de Boron", in Revue d'histoire des textes, 1971, pp. 145-181, there is only one manuscript of the original version in verse and about fifteen manuscripts of the adaptation in prose. The 14th century manuscript by Marmoutier, on which this copy was executed, is cited in his article. Back passed.
