KHUNRATH (Henricus)
Amphitheatrum sapientiae aeternae, solius verae, christiano-kabalisticum, divino-magicum. S.l.n.d. [at the colophon]: Hanau, Guillaume Antonius, 1609. In-folio, red morocco, double gilded net, large cartouche designed with a double straight and curved net, fleuron in the middle of each side and in the corners, central quadrilobe surrounded by a decoration with small irons, decorated back, inner roller, gilded edges, case (modern pastiche binding). Caillet, n°5747. - Dorbon, n°2363. Second edition of this famous work, one of the most curious of Kabbalistic theosophy, by Heinrich Khunrath (1560-1605), alchemist and Paracelsian physician. Superb intaglio illustration including a frontispiece title, a portrait of the author, 9 double-page plates (one of them shows Khunrath in his laboratory, and another shows him assaulted by animal-headed enemies), and a plate with an "owl" seal. A double-page synoptic table (out of 2) completes the author's comments. A copy bound in the 17th century style, the boards mounted on tabs at the end of the volume. The title-frontispiece and the portrait have been put together on modern sheets. The plate representing Khunrath and his enemies is cut in the bowl, restorations on the edges and corners of several plates (sometimes with small damage to the engraved subject). The plate of the seal is in facsimile. Burnishes. Reproduction on the next page
